Marakele Birding Weekend
20 to 22 October 2006
Previous Sasol Summer Birding Breakaway Weekend produced a count of 280 species but counts of around 380 have been recorded at Marakele Game Reserve near Brits.
The final numbers will be submitted as census statistics to the University of Cape Town's Avian Demography Unit which will raise the status of the essentially fun weekend to a mini bio-diversity study.
In addition to the bird spotting on all three days, the Sasol Spring Birding Breakaway will include talks by leading ornithologists. There will be a welcoming cheese-and-wine function on Friday October 21, "pap & sous" on the Saturday evening, and a traditional South African breakfast and attractive prizes on the Sunday morning when the birders return with their final tallies.
