Media Release: KNP Opens New Boardwalk
As part of SANParks National Parks Week, the Executive Director of the Kruger National Park, Dr Bandile Mkhize opened a wooden boardwalk at the Skukuza Nursery today (Tuesday September 19, 2006).
“Our main contribution to the inaugural National Parks Week will be the launch of this boardwalk facility and, for years to come, it will be remembered that one of the most significant events of this countrywide initiative took place here at the Skukuza Nursery,” said Dr Mkhize in his keynote address.
The new boardwalk, which runs from the parking lot of the nursery for 300 metres through an artificial wetland formed by Lake Panic dam to the front of the nursery, is designed to give guests an opportunity to learn more about wetlands and their associated fauna and flora while visiting the nursery.
To blend in with its surroundings, the boardwalk has been built with treated saligna poles and has been designed by the KNP’s Technical Services Department using the environmental best practice of “touching the earth lightly”.
“As the saying goes, money makes the world go round. It would certainly not have been possible to build this facility, and to open it today, without the help of the South African National Biodiversity Institute who contributed the majority of the funding needed to erect this facility,” added Dr Mkhize.
Built by an emerging contractor, Mr Goodman Tibane, the Boardwalk is 2.2-metres wide and is wheelchair friendly. Apart from tags that identify particular trees and shrubs seen from the deck of the boardwalk, there are also information boards that are specially designed to build awareness about wetlands and their importance in the eco-system.
The Skukuza Nursery was first opened to the public in 1977 and a wide variety of the indigenous plant species found in the Kruger National Park can be purchased there.
